Position Details

  • Role: Communications Manager
  • Location: Remote (LATAM-based)
  • Hours: Part-time (30 hours/week)

What You’ll Do
As LABI’s Communications Manager, you will:

  • Develop and execute our communications strategy
  • Create engaging digital content (social media, newsletters, blog posts)
  • Manage LABI’s website and social media channels
  • Build media relationships and enhance LABI’s visibility across LATAM
  • Evaluate and refine communication efforts based on KPIs

RI-Hubs Project: Enhancing Research Infrastructure Collaboration between Latin America and the EU

Latin America Bioimaging (LABI) participates in the RI-Hubs Project, an initiative aimed at creating and consolidating regional hubs in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) in collaboration with the European Union (EU). This project fosters a synchronized dynamic between Research Infrastructures (RI) in LAC and the EU, promoting the shared values of scientific excellence, open access, and cooperation in research.

The RI-Hubs Project brings together eight partner institutions from Brazil, Peru, Uruguay, Spain, Italy, and Portugal, all working towards the provision of open access research infrastructure to users and building stronger international scientific partnerships.

As part of this collaboration, we are organizing a series of webinars to explore key topics related to research infrastructure and data management, including:

  • Data Management: Focusing on Image Data Management in bioimaging and structural biology.
  • Science Diplomacy: Highlighting the importance of international scientific cooperation.
  • Facility Management: Discussing best practices for managing research infrastructures.

Our first webinar, titled “Image Data Management”, will take place on October 8th, 04:00 PM CEST and will feature leading experts from both Latin America and Europe.

EVENT OBJECTIVES AND GOALS

From June 3-7, 2024, a team of highly motivated image scientists organized the Latin America Light Microscopy Fundamentals Train-the-Trainer (LatLM-TtT) course at the Leloir Institute Foundation and University of Buenos Aires in Buenos Aires. During this event, twenty-three imaging scientists and researchers from across Latin America and Africa received training on how to run a fundamentals light microscopy course in their home regions.

The overall goals of the course were to:

  1. Train a community of imaging scientists how to run a fundamentals microscopy course.
  2. Provide resources to trainers, including presentation slides, course logistics guidelines, and hands-on activities.
  3. Build a community of trainers that will continue to work together and build capacity in light microscopy by implementing fundamentals microscopy courses across Latin America and Africa.
  4. Work as a team to continue building the trainers’ community by planning and running future training-the-trainer optical microscopy fundamentals course editions.

The objective of the Travel Grants Program is to provide financial support to individuals attending the LABI Meeting 2024, enabling them to travel to the event and actively participate in the discussions and networking activities. The program aims to promote inclusivity and foster collaboration within the bioimaging community in Latin America and the Caribbean region.
Travel grants are intended to provide financial support to individuals who would otherwise be unable to attend the event (click here for more details).

Program & Topics

The joint event #LABIxSuperres2024 will take place on August 19th to 23th, in the Jardim Botánico, Río do Janeiro, Brazil. LABIxSuperres is a targetted event for establishing and strengthening strategic links between bioimaging professionals throughout the region and key global partners and stakeholders from North America, Europe and Africa.

Who will participate?
LABI is an expanding community. Currently, 360 members from 26 countries and 65 core facilities from 11 regional countries registered in our website. LABI´s periodic newsletter has over 550 subscribers.

At the LABI Meeting, based on our experience at the 2022-23 meeting, we anticipate 90 in-person participants from at least 10 countries.

The LABI Meeting will focus on the following topics:

Train-the-Trainer event overview

Latin America Light Microscopy (LatLM) Train-the-Trainer is jointly organized by Latin America Bioimaging, Canada BioImaging, BioImaging North America, and Global Bioimaging.

This course is designed in the format of “train-the-trainer” and is aimed at imaging scientists who plan to run courses on fundamental topics in light microscopy for their own imaging communities.

It is not a microscopy course but a course to train imaging scientists how to run their courses and user training. The course will be taught in a way to provide participants with suggested content for each topic, annotated lecture slides, hands-on laboratory activities, trainer guides and information for course organization and logistics. Topics will be presented as modules and the course faculty and participants will have dynamic discussions including ways to add to and share module content and continuously improve what can be offered.

Participants will be encouraged to prepare and present a poster describing their imaging platform or a microscopy related project during the course.

This course is limited to 24 places and will take place in-person only.

Travel grants

Global BioImaging and Latin America Bioimaging is providing a number of travel grants for successful applicants who do not have institutional travel support to attend this course.

Applications for travel grants are invited by eligible persons (see prerequisites above).

Eligible cost items include the following: travel costs (round-trip airline tickets), public transportation costs, accommodation costs (hotel, guesthouse, etc.), and visa/transit visa application fees for Latin American applicants.
